Climate change mitigation and cooperative mechanisms

International climate negotiations have agreed on several mechanisms. These mechanisms are designed to help countries to mitigate climate change and to attract respective international public and private investment. Among these mechanism are the following:

  • Under the Kyoto Protocol these have been the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the Joint Implementation Mechanisms (JI), the Program of Activities and others.
  • Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Activities (NAMAs) focus on mitigation activities on sectoral levels and the new market mechanisms under the Paris Agreement are still being negotiated.

All mechanisms require the identification and assessment of the country-specific mitigation potential as well as monitoring, reporting and verification of results in accordance with the specific rules. We have developed CDM and JI projects as well as NAMAs in transition economies mainly. Moreover, we support respective capacity building for governments, NGOs and for private sector firms.
