Project Description

Climate policy assessment of approaches to the modernization of the coal sector in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia

On behalf of BMUB/GIZ DIW Econ provides a comprehensive analysis of  the prospects of the coal industry in Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine in order to find out whether a so called carbon revival (“Coal Renaissance”) in the CIS countries is inevitable or not. Within the study we analyse the coal and power sectors of the three countries and assess the coal price development and their influence on competitiveness of coal fired electricity generation as well as the planned measures for modernization of coal-fired power plants.

As result, respective policy recommendations are elaborated.
